چکیده

Besides the true fats (compounds of glycerol and fatty acids) other substances closely related to fats are utilized in the animal economy. Some of t.hese, including cholesterol, are essential constituents of every living cell. Cholesterol exists in the body tissues in both a free condition and a combined form as esters of higher fatty acids; such as palmitic, oleic, and stearic. Cholesterol in the free condition has been known to act as a neutralizing substance to a number of different poisons (antihemolytic action against saponin,’ tetanolysin,2 etc.). Very littln, however, is known of the USC of esters of cholesterol or the part that cholesterol plays in the metabolism of fatty acids. It has been shown that during absorption of free cholesterol from the intestine it is partially esterificd and appears so in the chyle and vice versa during absorption of cholest, erol esters they are partially hydrolyxed.3 During absorption of fat free from cholesterol Bloor’ found that the cholesterol of the blood remains constant and this is confirmed in the experiments reported here, although some investigators636 have claimed an increase of cholesterol. Studies with radioactive carbon-labeled acetate on cholesterol metabolism in rats fed p-dimethylaminoazobenzene.

Information concerning the cholesterol metabo lism of tumor-bearing animals is indeed small and also somewhat conflicting, in part due to lack of comparisons with homologous normal tissues. Ben net (1) found that as the age of the Flexner-Jobling tumors increases in rats the percentage of choles terol likewise increases. These findings were con firmed by Iwano (p2)and by Uramoto (3), the latter...

Application of the Schoenheimer-sperry Method to the Determination of Cho- Lesterol and Cholesterol Esters in Tissues*

In the course of studies planned on cholesterol metabolism, it was felt necessary to develop a microtechnique for cholesterol that would be suitable for analysis in tissues. It has been pointed out that a direct Liebermann-Burchard reaction method is dependent upon too many variables, some of which cannot be regulated, to be accurate for calorimetric work. There is also the possibility of other...

Species Differences of Serum and Liver Cholesterol Levels between Rabbits and Rats Fed on High-cholesterol Diet.

高折 修二 ・島本 暉朗 The experimental atheromatosis in various animals fed on high-fat, high-cholesterol diet has widely been used for the elucidation of the pathogenesis of clinical arterioscle rosis and for the laboratory evalution of lipolytic agents. Page et al. (1) and Myasnikov (2) have shown that rabbits are highly susceptive to the exogenously administered cho lesterol, while rats are relativel...

Reduction of /V-Methyl-/V-mtrosourea-mduced Colon Tumors in the Rat by Cholesterol1

Patient populations with a propensity to develop colon can cer have increased amounts of fecal cholesterol (and/or cho lesterol metabolites). In this study, we report the effect of increased colonie concentrations of cholesterol and its metab olites on colon tumor promotion. The chemical carcinogen Nmethyl-N-nitrosourea was instilled intrarectally into rats to ini tiate colon tumor formation. F...

deoxycholic acid and lithocholic acid, and cholesterol metab olites (10, 28, 26). Patients with colon cancer or nonhereditary adenomatous polyps excrete high levels of fecal secondary bile acids and cholesterol metabolites compared to healthy controls (12, 29). Such a relationship is further supported by experimental studies in animal models (3, 20—22,24). Recently, we have tested both primar...
